Every ultralight gear list on the internet has the same problem: it’s someone else’s list. This one is different in one specific way — every major item below won its category in our review process, which means each pick links to the full evidence for why it’s here. Copy the list as-is, or follow the links and argue with our reasoning. Both work.

The target: a true three-season base weight of 11 lb 4 oz. Base weight means everything in and on your pack except consumables — food, water, fuel — and the clothes you’re wearing. It’s the number you control with decisions rather than appetite, and it’s the number that decides whether mile twelve feels like a walk or a sentence.

The full-build cost lands near $1,450. The budget column gets you under $800 and still under 13 pounds — and we’d take the budget build over a $3,000 kit assembled by vibes, because coherence beats receipts. One system, every piece doing a job, nothing aspirational.

Why the X-Mid over lighter shelters: our tent testing found the weight gap to trekking-pole Dyneema shelters costs $400 and a condensation learning curve — money and patience better spent elsewhere on your first build. Why a quilt: the sleeping bag data shows the down you crush under your body insulates nothing, so carrying it is sentiment. That’s it. That’s the list.

The three-piece logic beats the six-jacket closet because the pieces stack: fleece while hiking a frosty morning, puffy over it at breaks, shell over everything when the sky opens. Each layer earns its place in a specific named scenario — and that’s the test for anything else begging to come along: if you can’t name the specific scenario where you wear it, it stays home. “In case it gets cold” is not a scenario; it’s the first sentence of a 35-pound pack.

Everything else — 1 lb 9 oz

  • Headlamp: Nitecore NU25 UL, 1.6 oz, USB-C, and bright enough for night miles

Notice what’s absent: no camp chair, no second knife, no 50 feet of “just in case” paracord, no stuff sack of mystery items that survived three seasons unopened. Every veteran’s pack got lighter the same way — not by buying, but by auditing. Total build as listed: 11 lb 4 oz.

Before you spend a dollar on anything above: weigh everything you currently own. A $12 kitchen scale and a free LighterPack account will change your hiking more than any single purchase — because you cannot fix what you haven’t measured, and everyone’s spreadsheet contains at least one “wait, it weighs WHAT” moment. The flashlight that weighs as much as a day of food. The knife that could field-dress an elk you will never meet.

Then run the free cuts in order: delete duplicates (two knives, three lighters, the backup backup battery), downsize containers (decant the sunscreen, repackage the first aid), and shift weight from pack to body on cold mornings. Most hikers find 1.5–2 pounds in an afternoon without spending anything. Then — and only then — upgrade in this order: pad, quilt, shelter, pack. The pad first because it’s the cheapest pound saved; the pack last because the right pack depends on the volume of everything else, and buying it first means buying it twice.

What about food and water weight?

Consumables sit outside base weight but inside your shoulders’ opinion, so the short version: food runs 1.5–2 pounds per day if you choose by calorie density (100+ calories per ounce or it stays home — nuts, olive oil, tortillas, dehydrated meals), and water is 2.2 pounds per liter, which is why reading a map for water sources is the lightest gear there is. A typical five-day carry adds 10–12 pounds to the 11.4 above at trailhead, melting daily. Total worst case: 23 pounds, which the Circuit carries without comment.

Eleven pounds is the comfortable floor; treat anything lower as a hobby, not a requirement.

What should I buy first if I’m upgrading piece by piece?

The sleeping pad, almost always. It’s the cheapest pound in the Big Four ($140–200 saves 1–2 pounds over old-school pads), it upgrades every single night’s sleep immediately, and it works with whatever bag and tent you already own. Then quilt, then shelter, then — last, always last — the pack.

Do I really need trekking poles?

If you carry the X-Mid, they’re your tent poles, so they’re already on the manifest — working double shifts. Beyond that: the data on knees and downhills is genuinely persuasive past your twenties, river crossings stop being adventures, and a snapped pole is a splint, a tarp ridge and a camera mount. They’re the most multi-functional 18 ounces in the kit, and they don’t count toward base weight while they’re in your hands.
