Sleeping Pad R-Values Explained: The Number That Decides Your Night

You can spend $700 on a down sleeping bag and still freeze at 35°F — because the ground steals heat through conduction faster than the air ever will, and the only thing standing between you and it is your pad’s R-value.

This is the most common cold-night mistake in our entire sleep system database, and it has a recognizable account: “Bag rated to 20, I was freezing at 38, bag is garbage.” Then, paragraphs later: an R-1.5 pad from a decade ago. The bag was never on trial. The floor was.

R-value, in one honest paragraph

R-value measures resistance to heat flow — higher number, less body heat lost downward. It’s linear: R-4 insulates twice as well as R-2. The reason it matters more than your bag’s rating underneath you is simple physics: down insulates by trapping air in loft, and your body weight crushes that loft flat. The under-side of your $700 bag is doing approximately nothing. Your pad isn’t an accessory to the sleep system; beneath you, it is the sleep system.

Since 2020, the ASTM F3340 standard made R-values comparable across brands — before that, manufacturers measured however flattered them, and the era’s gear forums are an archaeological record of the confusion. The practical consequence: distrust R-value claims on pads designed before 2020 and on no-name imports that don’t cite the standard. A real R-value costs real testing; “R-9.5, $39, ships tomorrow” is a fiction with free returns.

Two adjustments to the chart, both supported by the cold-night reports. Cold sleepers add one full R-value to every row — the same physiology that demands a warmer bag demands a warmer floor, and pads don’t come in women’s-specific versions to do it for you. And hammock campers: the chart doesn’t apply, your problem is worse, and the answer is an underquilt — moving air strips heat from a compressed pad faster than any ground does.

The stacking trick

R-values add. That single fact is the cheapest winter upgrade in backpacking: a summer inflatable (R 2.3) on top of a $25 closed-cell foam pad (R 2) gives you R 4.3 — true three-season warmth assembled from gear you may already own. Foam goes on the ground, inflatable on top: the foam shields your expensive air pad from punctures while it works, doubles as a sit pad at breaks, and serves as the emergency backup the night the inflatable meets its cactus.

This is also the honest answer for occasional winter trips. Rather than owning a $240 R-7 pad you use twice a year, stack your three-season inflatable over a winter-weight foam pad and bank R 6+ for thirty dollars. The thru-hiker version of the same logic runs all season: foam pad outside the pack for breaks and emergencies, inflatable inside for nights.

Foam vs. air: the two-minute decision

  • Closed-cell foam (Z Lite, Switchback): indestructible, $25–50, doubles as frame sheet and sit pad — and runs R 2, 14 oz, an inch thick. Side sleepers’ hips file complaints by midnight.
  • Air pads (XLite NXT, Tensor): 2.5–3.5 inches of genuine comfort at 12–15 oz with real R-values — and they can puncture, they cost $130–230, and they ask you to carry a patch kit you’ll use maybe twice a decade.
  • Self-inflating (the classic ProLite lineage): the durable, affordable middle that weighs more per unit of warmth than either extreme. Right answer for car-camping crossover; rarely the answer at ultralight weights.

On the noise question that haunts this category: yes, the older NeoAir generation crinkled like a chip bag in a wind tunnel, loudly enough to feature in owners’ relationships. The NXT generation largely fixed it — owners who upgraded specifically for noise confirm the difference — so a 2020-era horror story shouldn’t decide a 2026 purchase.

Care, punctures, and the long game

Air pads die two ways: punctures, which are repairable trailside in ten minutes if you carry the patch kit (carry the patch kit), and slow baffle failures from years of being stored inflated or wet. Store yours dry, unrolled or loosely rolled, valve open. Inflate with a pump sack rather than your lungs — breath moisture freezes inside winter pads and feeds mildew in summer ones. No — insulation works both directions only in marketing myths. An R-5 pad in July doesn’t cook you; heat flows from warm to cold, and on a hot night there’s simply less flow to resist. The real summer cost of a high-R pad is ounces and dollars, not sweat. Buy for your coldest regular night, not your average one.

Do R-values degrade over time?

Foam pads lose a little loft (and R) with years of compression — visible as flattening. Air pads hold their R until a baffle or coating fails, which is sudden rather than gradual. The practical rule: a decade-old foam pad rates a season warmer in your memory than on the ground, so test old gear on a tolerable night before trusting it on a serious one.

What R-value do kids and dogs need?

Kids sleep colder than adults — smaller bodies, faster heat loss — so give them the warm pad, not the old one, and add the cold-sleeper adjustment. The dog is wearing a fur coat and will end up on your pad regardless; plan accordingly.
